Piskopiano is a charming traditional village on the island of Crete, located on a hillside above Hersonissos about 25 km east of Heraklion. It’s one of three connected villages — alongside Koutouloufari and Ano Hersonissos — known for their authentic Cretan atmosphere, panoramic sea views, and relaxed pace.
Unlike the busy beach resorts below, Piskopiano is quieter and more traditional. The village has stone-built houses, narrow winding lanes, flowering courtyards, and tavernas overlooking the sea. Many visitors stay here because it combines peaceful village life with easy access to beaches and nightlife in nearby Hersonissos.
Historically, the village dates back to at least the 14th century. It likely developed during the Middle Ages when locals moved inland to escape pirate raids along the coast. The name comes from its historical connection to the bishopric (“episcopate”) of Hersonissos.
Travelers frequently recommend the Piskopiano area for its “relaxed evening vibe” and good location for exploring the island.
